The unlock scenario is almost always mundane: the bank sends statements locked to your ID number, HR locks payslips, and now opening your own archive means retyping a password twelve times a year. Removing the lock from files that are already safely yours is housekeeping, not hacking.
What makes upload-based unlockers absurd is the combination they request: a confidential locked file andits password, on someone else's server. Here both stay in your browser's memory for the seconds decryption takes — then the open copy lands in your downloads and the session is gone.
Can this crack a PDF whose password I don't know?+
No — and that's deliberate. This tool decrypts with the password you provide, for files you legitimately have access to: your own protected documents, statements whose password is your date of birth, files a colleague locked before leaving. It is not a password cracker.
Why remove a password at all?+
Recurring passwords are friction: a bank statement you open monthly, an archive of payslips, files that need to go into a document system that can't handle encryption. Once a file is safely stored, the lock often costs more than it protects.
Where does the decryption happen?+
In your browser. The locked file and the password you type are processed in the tab's memory on your device — neither is transmitted. The unlocked copy downloads straight to your disk.
It says my password is wrong but I'm sure it's right — why?+
A few PDFs use uncommon or very old encryption variants that browsers can't decrypt. If your password is definitely correct and it still fails, the file likely uses one of those — a desktop tool like qpdf handles the exotic cases. Your file wasn't uploaded during the attempt.
